High Pressure Industrial Sensors

Full scale pressure ranges for industrial applications can be as low as 1 psi or even in inches of water, vacuum or as high as 15,000 psi or more. Rugged packaging is essential for many of the applications that require these sensors with all-welded stainless-steel construction being either standard or optional. Depending on the application, other packaging options may be required. For example, the materials in refrigeration and intrinsically safe designs for use in hazardous environments dictate alternate construction techniques. In some cases, programmability allows a transducer to be optimized for a particular application. Here are examples of each of these high pressure products.

Pressure Transducers and Transmitters

PCB Piezotronics Series 1500 transducers and transmitters target general purpose and hazardous industrial environments. The rugged, all-welded stainless-steel construction of general purpose units eliminates mechanical fasteners, washers, O-rings and fluid fills. This provides increased reliability and long-term repeatability for a variety of laboratory, factory, field or submersible environments. Supplied with 0 to 5V dc, 0 to 10V dc or loop-powered 4–20 mA output signals and the choice of pressure port and electrical connectors, full scale ranges are available from full vacuum to 6,000 psi (400 bar) with accuracies of 0.5, 0.25 and 0.1 percent. Intrinsically safe units use a thin, one-piece stainless-steel pressure fitting, port and diaphragm design with ½-inch NPT thread. For H2S and sour gas media compatibility, an Inconel option is available. Constructed without adhesives, welds or fluid fillings, these sensors have been certified under ATEX and CSA as intrinsically safe for use in hazardous environments. With full scale-pressure ratings from 500 to 10k psi (35 to 690 bar), units have a 4 to 20 mA output and operate at temperatures up to 250F (121C).

Refrigeration Pressure Sensor

Designed to withstand the pressure fluctuations experienced in compressor discharge situations, Kavlico's P4000 pressure sensor targets OEM refrigerant pressure applications. Compatible with all HFC/HCFC refrigerants and ammonia, the sensors can monitor high and low side pressures in microprocessor-based control systems, as well as measurements in refrigerant handling and recovery. With absolute or sealed gauge pressures of ratings of 0 to 100 through 0 to 4000 psi, these units have a fully calibrated, temperature compensated 0.5 to 4.5V dc output. The sensor's total error band (calibration, linearity, temperature errors, hysteresis and repeatability) is as low as ±1 percent over the operating temperature range of -40 to 125C. Pressure connection options include NPT and Schrader deflator fittings and electrical connector options include AMP, Packard, DIN and Deutsch connectors.

Programmable Pressure Transducer

STS Sensors & PMC Inc. PTM Series 40 precision rangeable pressure transmitters/transducers have a total accuracy, including temperature of 0.15 percent. A 4:1 programmable turndown allows each transmitter to be optimized for a particular application maximizing the resolution. The circuitry includes programmability, as well as digital compensation and a conventional 4 to 20 mA output. With full scale ranges from 1 to 15,000 psi in gauge, absolute or sealed gauge versions, the total error band (including linearity, hysteresis, repeatability and thermal effects) of units with the active compensation option is less than ± 0.15 percent FS from 15 to 125F and less than ± 0.7 percent FS from -15 to 185F for units rated above 7 psi. For media compatibility, the units use stainless-steel 316L and Viton seals standard but other seal materials and a fully welded 316L version are available. The units target production test and development projects in automotive, aerospace, engines, compressors, process monitoring and control and more.
