BP Deploys Sensors to Measure Gulf Oil Spill

BPhas deployed underwater pressure sensors in an effort to better measure how muchoil is gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, theAssociated Press reported yesterday.

Roboticsubmarines were expected to insert the sensors through a line used to injectmethanol - an antifreeze meant to prevent the buildup of icelike slush - intoa containment cap seated over the ruptured pipe, BP spokesman David Nicholastold the news agency.

Government estimates indicate the oil spill could exceed 100 milliongallons, though BP officials state the company is capturing about 630,000gallons per day.

According to the Associated Press, BP has said it could begin siphoning anadditional 400,000 gallons a day starting Tuesday by burning it using aspecialized boom being installed on a rig.
