Controls match motors for improved performance
August 17, 1998
Think of everything a design engineer must consider when selecting the most appropriate motor for an application: Ac or dc? Permanent magnet or brushless? Which is the most reliable, the most durable?
Then consider finding the controls that work best with the chosen motor. In truth, most system problems are caused by the controls, not the motor.
Controls should guarantee that the motor speed is regulated and remains constant. They should provide proper current limits, depending on the size of the motor, and they should offer adjustable speed controls.
To help ensure such a proper fit, Bodine offers dc and brushless controls designed to operate in tandem with specific motors. Bodine's latest UPM controls, for example, drive all stock Bodine Permanent Magnet and similarly rated motors.
UPM units also feature quick-connect tabs and pluggable terminal blocks for easier installation. They operate at either 115 or 230V ac, and are configurable with a pluggable jumper. They provide unfiltered output of 0 to 90V dc when operated from 115V ac (0 to 80V dc at 230V ac).
The controls can be used in intermittent-duty applications, offer a bank of DIP switches, and feature an added switch to set the output voltage. The UPM 3318C also has six adjustable trim pots: MIN/MAX speed, ACC/DEC time, TORQue limit, and REGulation. Other properties include: two LEDs, green for "power on" and red for when the current exceeds the TORQ pot limit; and provisions for connecting to a remote inhibit switch.
