California RoHS hits lighting industry in 2010

Starting this year, lighting manufacturers and retailers have to abide by the California RoHS law prohibiting products that do not meet the state’s Lighting Efficiency and Toxics Reductions Act. According to an article posted by the Bureau Veritas Group, the sale of lights manufactured  for sale in California must comply with the provisions of the European Union’s RoHS Directive, which restricts the use of certain hazardous substances.

Affected manufacturers will be required to certify that their lighting products do not contain prohibited levels of hazardous substances. Manufacturers can comply with the requirement by either providing the retailer with a certificate attesting to compliance, or by displaying the required certification on the shipping container, or on the product packaging.
