The brick-and-mortar store has slowly been disappearing from the retail landscape as companies embrace online commerce and, more recently, virtual reality. But Meta, the company behind the social media platform Facebook and other metaverse products, is somewhat ironically jumping into the brick-and-mortar store experience.

Meta will open its Meta Store on May 9 on its campus in Burlingame, California. The store will enable the public to gain hands-on experience with its various metaverse products, including Ray-Ban Stories, Meta Portal, and Meta Quest 2. Meta considers the store as a valuable partner to market its metaverse products.

“Having the store here in Burlingame gives us more opportunity to experiment and keep the customer experience core to our development. What we learn here will help define our future retail strategy,” said Martin Gilliard, Head of Meta Store, in a released statement.

At roughly 1,550 square feet, the Meta Store has a relatively small footprint, but the location is near Meta’s Reality Labs HQ, where the company develops its metaverse products. The store will enable users to purchase Quest 2, Quest 2 accessories, and Portal devices. Sale associates will help customers order Ray-Ban Stories directly from Ray-Ban.com.

The Meta Store may give its tech-savvy customers a similar experience to what customers encounter when they go into a physical Apple Store. While many of its customers will purchase its products online, Apple Stores stock a full array of various Apple products, ranging from iPhones to iPads through Mac computers, that enable customers to look and get a feel of the products. Dozens of trained salespersons are there to answer questions but apply no sales pressure.

See and Feel

The Meta store hopes to accomplish the same goals, by letting customers try on, without any pressure, various Ray-Ban Stories style, color, and lens variations. A separate demo area will allow customers to check out Portal, placing a video call to a retail associate to fully explore its capabilities, see Smart Camera in action, and play with features like Story Time.

The Meta Store also features an interactive Quest 2 display wall that enables customers to explore hardware, accessories, and content available. An immersive Quest 2 demo area will let customers play Beat SaberGOLF+Real VR Fishing or Supernatural on a large, wall-to-wall curved LED screen that displays what the customers sees in the headset.

“The Meta Store is going to help people make that connection to how our products can be the gateway to the metaverse in the future. We’re not selling the metaverse in our store, but hopefully, people will come in and walk out knowing a little bit more about how our products will help connect them to it,”  Gilliard added.

The Meta Store will open May 9 and operate Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM Pacific time. It’s located at 322 Airport Blvd in Burlingame, California.
