RGB Multi ChipLEDs

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors' RGB Multi ChipLEDs are used in the FormoLight display. Their compact sizepermits a special image format in LED video displays ranging in size from smallto large screens. In this display, for interior use, the LEDs are not used asbacklighting light sources that are hidden from viewers such as in LCDs, but inthis application the LEDs are clearly visible on the surface of the display. Theyremain undetected by viewers because of the Multi ChipLEDs small size of 1.6 x1.6 mm and 0.9 mm thick, and virtually invisible through the black LED housing.

Multi ChipLEDs produce ahomogenous image from virtually any viewing angle. This homogeneity is based ontwo principles. The LEDs can be packed very closely together because of theircompact size - the distance between pixels can be as little as 2 mm. Also, the special casting material ensures aperfect color mix. The LEDs contain three chips (red, green, blue) manufacturedusing OSRAM's Thinfilm or ThinGaN technology, each of which can be controlledseparately. The color impression is constant across the entire viewing angleand remains brilliant even when viewed from the side. Thanks to the LEDs' sharpcontrasts and high output, this high image quality is maintained even in highambient light environments. The LEDs are characterized by low power consumptionand long life.
