Maker Faire celebrated its 10^th anniversary recently with familiar celebrities and top chip companies, its youthful energy and do-it-yourself values intact. The gathering on the doorstep of Silicon Valley will spread to nearly 200 events attracting as many as a million people this year.

"I believe the Maker movement will transform the way kids learn today -- it's almost as far away from standardized testing as you can get," said Dale Dougherty who helped found the hands-on tech event a decade ago, during the anniversary event in San Mateo, Calif. "I was meeting really interesting people most folks don't get a chance to meet and thought of the fair as a way to get them together."

Now Dougherty is trying to spread his gospel of hands-on education with summer camps, Maker Faires in schools, and an online guide to Maker spaces around the world. "We have to provide more resources to help young people gain access to tools and expertise," he said.
