When I first started reading science fiction, there was a relatively clear distinction between sci-fi and fantasy. That distinction is blurred beyond recognition, and that’s particularly noticeable with TV-based stories. Sci-fi, fantasy, and horror are all mixed up.

Take The Walking Dead. There’s not a lot of science in it, but perhaps more science than you’ll find in Star Wars. Is Lost sci-fi? How about His Dark Materials or Snowpiercer? So, with all that confusion in mind, selecting the best sci-fi TV shows is quite a thrill.

Thanks to the explosion of creativity in the TV world, and the numerous networks and production companies eager to fund substantial budgets, we’re seeing a ton of excellent science fiction on television.

As for the stories themselves, many of them are just fine. Sci-fi stories on TV have always been great, going back to The Twilight Zone and the first Star Trek. The difference in the 21st Century is improved production and acting.
