Urs Kafader

Dr. Urs Kafader works and lives in Sarnen, Switzerland. He has a physics degree and an MBA from the Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, and a doctorate from the UHA Mulhouse in France. He started his career at the ETH Solid State Physics Department working on the epitaxy of semiconductor heterostructures and also attended lectures on general didactics and specialized training for technology education. For more than 15 years, Dr. Kafader has been responsible for technical training at maxon motor. In this function, he has presented many training courses and seminars for the maxon staff and customers. He also wrote a textbook titled  The Selection of High-Precision Microdrives .

The next step in complexity is combining several axes to perform a coordinated motion. This class reviews the different concepts that can be used. The motion control example for a delta robot illustrates how high-level multi-axes control can be achieved.

This class starts with a short review on DC motor design types and their properties. We will look at the operational limits of DC motors and their behavior. A practical motor selection example will illustrate what we have learned up to this point.

April 29 - Day 1: A Systematic Approach to Drive Selection

This class will provide a framework for drive selection. We will review the general requirements of drives used in robotic systems. We will deal systematically with the selection criteria of an individual axis, including power and mechanics, as well as control and environmental aspects.
