Add Touch to a Smartphone or Mini Tablet

Touch technology is becoming ubiquitous. Blame it on Windows 8, or blame it on the simplicity that it delivers. But it's here to stay, and that's a good thing. To simplify the design of touch-based products, particularly for mobile devices like smartphones and smaller tablets, Atmel has developed the mXT640T, mXT336T, and mXT224T touchscreen controllers. The devices provide a comprehensive set of touch features to support touchscreens ranging from 3.2 inch to 8.3 inch.

The devices' features include a 1-mm passive or active stylus hover capability, moisture immunity, and multi-finger glove support. The parts incorporate Atmel's adaptive sensing technology to enable dynamic touch classification, a feature that automatically and intelligently switches between self- and mutual-capacitance sensing to provide users a seamless transition between a finger touch, hover, passive, or active stylus, or glove touch. This eliminates the need for users to manually enable glove mode in the operating system to differentiate between modes. Adaptive sensing also reduces the device's power consumption. The analog front-end offers flexible settings to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) prior to digital processing, eliminating signal distortions induced by water and noisy chargers.
