Building Wireless Applications

Wireless automation generates its share of hype nowadays. But just how many practical uses for the technology exist right now? Quite a few, judging from the Siemens Automation Summit, held last month in Las Vegas. "Wireless is out there. We've been delivering it for two years now," says Jeremy Bryant, a networking automation specialist for Siemens. In a presentation at the summit, Bryant discussed about a dozen wireless applications that Siemens has already delivered to its customers. Some are obvious ones involving simple remote access to automation data and displays. But he also touched on some more advanced wireless capabilities — including deterministic control and even machine safety.
