Swinburne and Suntech Launch Advanced Solar Facility

A new solar facility in Melbourne, Australia allows solarenergy collection from a wider color spectrum than solar cell currently in use, according to Suntech Power Holdings and Swinburne University of Technology, partners in a recently launched solar facility.

The Victoria-Suntech Advanced Solar Facility is acollaborative venture between Suntech and Swinburne University to provide aplatform to commercialize nanoplasmonic solar cell technology (Nanoplas). "Thisnew Nanoplas technology will allow for the efficient collection of solar energyfrom a wider color spectrum than cells currently being developed in otherlaboratories," says Min Gu, director of the Swinburne Centre forMicro-Photonics. "This could make solar cells twice as efficient as the currentgeneration of cells, which would also make them significantly less costly toproduce and therefore to use."
