Swinburne and Suntech Launch Advanced Solar Facility

A new solar facility in Melbourne, Australia allows solar energy collection from a wider color spectrum than solar cell currently in use, according to Suntech Power Holdings and Swinburne University of Technology, partners in a recently launched solar facility.

The Victoria-Suntech Advanced Solar Facility is a collaborative venture between Suntech and Swinburne University to provide a platform to commercialize nanoplasmonic solar cell technology (Nanoplas). "This new Nanoplas technology will allow for the efficient collection of solar energy from a wider color spectrum than cells currently being developed in other laboratories," says Min Gu, director of the Swinburne Centre for Micro-Photonics. "This could make solar cells twice as efficient as the current generation of cells, which would also make them significantly less costly to produce and therefore to use."
