MEMS Industry Group Reveals Anticipated Trillion Sensor Roadmap

at the recent 2015 TSensors Summit, the objective of which is to increase awareness worldwide about emerging sensor-based applications that have major potential for commercialization in the next decade.

The roadmap also aims to facilitate collaboration and engagement between those developing sensor technology and those interested in commercializing it, with the idea that early visibility of these applications will reduce the commercialization cycle from two to three decades to less than one.

Sensors are becoming integral to numerous applications and are at the heart of emerging technology paradigms such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and mHealth. Multiple visions have emerged for a TSensors market, with the largest forecasting 100 trillion sensors by 2030 -- hence the name for the roadmap

The forecasted magnitude of the IoT and mHealth fields, which are expected to reach $32.5 trillion by 2025 -- or about 36% of the current GDP -- contribute to the trillion-sensor prediction. The IoT also is expected to contribute to a massive growth in sensors in the next 15 to 20 years. Some estimate the business opportunities represented by this potential explosion in sensor use to represent as much as 50% to 90% of global profits in 2025, according to the group.

Sensors like these will be at the heart of substantial business opportunity and world-changing applications in the next 20 years, according to the MEMS and Sensors Industry Group.

The MEMS Sensors and Industry Group has organized seven TSensors Summits between 2013 and 2015 worldwide, and the roadmap leverages key content from presentations at these summits. About 260 speakers from seven countries presented their visions for the emerging ultrahigh-volume sensor-based applications and supporting technologies at these events, which form the foundation of the roadmap.

The roadmap itself focuses on these emerging 2025 ultra-high-volume applications that can have a profound positive affect on the world and contribute to goals such as eliminating world hunger, offering medical care and clean energy to all of the world’s population, and ending pollution, goals the group aims to achieve in about 20 years through the use of sensor technology.

These applications are in line with other trends in the industry, such as the IoT, digital health, and emerging food and agriculture technologies, providing massive business opportunities as they mature, the group said.
