Stainless steel

Project 7000(TM)15Cr-5Ni stainless steel is said by its manufacturer to offer improved machinability, which in turn reduces part costs, reduces cycle time, and increases productivity. The product is also said to offer the same physical properties of conventional stainless steel alloys, such as toughness, high strength, and corrosion resistance. The material meets current ASTM and AMS specifications, and doesn't require manufacturers to purchase new equipment. Experimental heats were evaluated for mechanical properties, microstructure, and machinability.

"This stainless steel alloy is designed to improve its machining characteristics," says contest judge Francis McMichael of Carnegie Mellon. "Nickel-chromium steels are hard to machine and all improvements are welcomed."

Thermoplastic polyurethane

SS-1485 is a general purpose polyester thermoplastic polyurethane, and is reported to have good mechanical properties while resisting oils and solvents. The material is manufactured in thicknesses ranging from 0.001 to 0.125 inch and widths from 5 to 80 inches. Tensile strength is a reported 10,000 psi, and the product is available in hardness from 75 to 95 Shore A and in standard and custom colors.

Materials handling

The Light Duty Line Vac is said to convert an ordinary hose or tube into a conveyor for scrap, trim, and bulk materials.
