Xandem Productizes Through-Walls Motion Detector

Sectioned imaging is getting productized via Xandem's tomographic motion detection system, which can visualize objects through walls and other obstructions by reconstructing them off of returns from 2.4GHz radio waves. It's now available in beta for pre-orders.

The background: The sensing technology used in Xandem's tomograph motion detection (TMD) system is based on research into radio tomographic imaging conducted at the University of Utah by Xandem founder Joey Wilson and Neal Patwari, an assistant professor in electrical engineering at the university and director of the Sensing and Processing Across Networks (SPAN) lab. They've published an IEEE paper on their work, titled "See-Through Walls: Motion Tracking Using Variance-Based Radio Tomography Networks."

What: Xandem's TMB comes with sensing nodes and a processing unit. The nodes are placed around the area you want to keep an eye on; they're powered by USB or 3-V wiring. Xandem says its system can be easily integrated with existing panel equipment.

Price/availability: Pricing depends on the size and configuration of the network. Nodes are currently selling for $109 each, with the total number of nodes required depending on the application. Xandem is currently taking pre-orders for systems through its Website.
