Gearmotor reduces costs, cuts design time

The True PlanetaryTM Gearmotor from Thomson Micron integrates brushless dc servo-motor technology with True Planetary gearing in one complete package from one supplier. Integrating the gearhead and motor in a single package ensures proper alignment and reduces tolerance stack-up that adds compliance to motion-system designs and limits servo performance. According to General Managing Director David Cannon, the design has fewer parts, is more cost-effective and reliable, and takes up less space than using individual components.

Available in 40-, 60-, and 90-mm frame sizes with torque ranges from 11 to 167 Nm (98 to 1,500 in-lbs), the gearmotors are designed for operation in highly dynamic velocity or position servo systems where compact size and high torque are required. Backlash ratings of 8 arc-min are realized in 3:1, 5:1, and 10:1 ratios, and 9 arc-min in 15:1, 25:1, 30:1, 50:1, and 100:1 ratios.

Integrated Hall effect sensors provide commutation, and a wide range of mechanical options are available including resolvers, encoders, and connectors. Applications include packaging, robotics, and automation equipment.
