fpgaphoto.jpgA number of tools are available to help designers develop and work with FGPAS. Hymel discusses the open-source Ice40 FPGA toolchain, which includes apio, yosys, nextpnr, and Project IceStorm. He walks the designer through tool selection, installation, and usage, apio, and gives examples of projects appropriate for these tools.

Although FPGAs may sound a bit intimidating at first, Hymel puts those concerns to rest by clearly showing the steps to implement and use an FPGA tool, using apio as an example. The tool contains numerous drop-down menus and other aids to guide the user, and Hymel discusses how to use the tools various features efficiently to improve design productivity.
