EV TLC: Which States Are the Best for Electric Vehicles?EV TLC: Which States Are the Best for Electric Vehicles?
The data is in: These are the top 10 states for EV use and ownership in 2022.
October 25, 2022
There’s a lot of EVs on the road and that number is growing. As of September 18, there are 2,531,206 battery electric vehicles in the US (according to Earthweb) and in the first three months of 2022, EV registrations shot up 60%, even though the overall market was down by 18% (according to a report by Automotive News). And that was before the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), with its many new incentives for buying a new or used EV, was passed. The numbers are expected to grow quickly.
But it won’t surprise you to hear that those millions of EVs are not uniformly spread across the US. So, which states are providing the most fertile ground for those numbers to grow? In other words, which states are providing the charging infrastructure, buyer incentives and other factors that make EV use a lower-cost, hassle-free proposition?
Market researchers at Digital Third Coast found answers by cataloging the following for each state:
Number of registered EVs per capita.
The ratio of public electric vehicle chargers to registered electric vehicles.
Number of state tax incentives for personal electric vehicle owners.
Gas prices (as of August 2022).
Electricity prices (as of 2020).
From this data, they were able to rate each state for overall “EV friendliness.” (Information first shared by trade journal The Fabricator and shared here with permission.) What follows is a state-by-state look at the 10 states most welcoming of EV use and ownership in 2022. Some of them will surprise you:
