Don’t Miss These 6 ESC Silicon Valley Events
From free Amazon Alexa hardware and software, to an iPhone X teardown, to tutorial and networking opportunities, and more, here are 6 things you can’t miss at ESC Silicon Valley next week.

After great events in Boston and Minneapolis, the Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) makes its final 2017 stop in Silicon Valley next week, coming home to the heart of embedded engineering and innovation in San Jose.

This year ESC will host four educational tracks in Silicon Valley, expanding its traditional Embedded Hardware Design & Verification, Embedded Software Design & Verification, and Connected Devices & IoT trio of tracks to add Advanced Technologies, a new-in-2017 track focused on innovations like autonomous vehicles and artificial intelligence.

Below we’ve highlighted six can’t-miss events and sessions that embedded designers and engineers should plan to attend including workshops with hardware giveaways, live teardowns, and more. Register for ESC Silicon Valley here.

Alexa, Where Can I Learn About Designing with Your Intelligent Voice Recognition?

Maybe you’re hoping for an Amazon Echo Dot this holiday season? Why hope when you can design in Amazon’s Alexa technology into your devices.

At ESC Silicon Valley, Amazon will host three sessions: a hands-on workshop open to all attendees where complimentary hardware and software will be provided, a technical session as part of the conference, and an ESC Engineering Theater session on the expo floor, with each one of these offering learning on the SDK (software development kit) for AVS (Alexa Voice Services). Heads up that, once you’ve registered for ESC, you must sign up for the workshop as seating is limited.

The sessions compliment the Amazon and Intel Smart Life Roadshow 30-foot traveling trailer outfitted with AVS products, the Amazon Echo family of devices, and a range of “Works with Amazon Alexa” smart home devices and Intel supporting technology. The trailer can be found on the ESC expo floor and is open to all ESC attendees. ESC attendees who visit the trailer can take a guided tour of the trailer, featuring four display areas — a home office, kitchen, product displays, and living room — and run through a range of voice-forward experiences, from simple, one device interactions to scenes involving multiple products.

iPhone X Live Teardown

Why exactly does the iPhone X cost more than your first car? We’ll find out during the first ESC keynote when iFixit founder and CEO Kyle Wiens tears down the most advanced iPhone yet, digging into its design to see what makes it so cutting-edge, not to mention costly.

Wiens will also discuss the “Right to Repair,” a global movement of tinkerers, hackers, and self-taught mechanics that are fighting for legislation that could reshape the electronics landscape by supporting the independent repair industry.

Want a Real R2D2? A New AI Approach Is Forming

“Deep learning” and “artificial intelligence” are really only buzzwords, as fictional as R2D2, if we don’t first better understand natural human intelligence. The process of biomimicry — applying natural intelligence principles to software strategies — is what is going to turn our devices into companions, according to ESC Silicon Valley’s second keynote speaker, Gunnar Newquist.

Newquist, himself, is a scientist turned entrepreneur obsessed with the functionality of the brain and how living creatures learn. He obtained a PhD in Cell & Molecular Neuroscience from the University of Nevada, Reno, and conducted a post-doctorate in learning and memory at ESPCI Paris-Tech. Renaissance man that he is, he is also a trained concert pianist and a former professional extreme skier.
