In 2015, China became the largest new car market in the world and it has continued to grow. In addition, thanks to a wide range of government support, China has also become the world’s largest market for electric vehicles (EVs). The rapid growth of the Chinese EV market has been supported by a concerted effort to dominate the lithium ion battery business—both in terms of raw materials and in battery manufacturing.

During 2018, Design News has closely followed the growth of the Chinese EV marketplace, as well as the growing dominance of Chinese lithium ion battery production. Below are four stories from the past year that will help provide an understanding of how China has reached its leadership position and where it plans to go in the future.
