Zipcar Campus Car-Sharing Program Booms

Zipcar's campus car-sharing program has expanded to more than 140 campuses across North America and Great Britain. The program works by providing green cars on a shared basis to university communities where parking is a problem and car ownership is difficult and costly. University students and staff can use shared cars for off-campus errands and brief road trips.

Zipcar's program has grown 75 percent in the past year, now serving a total student population of 1 million in 25 cities. Using data from the EPA, Zipcar estimates its university programs have reduced carbon emissions by nearly 56 million lb annually, equivalent to the annual emission of 4,800 passenger vehicles.
