January 26-28, Anaheim Convention Center, Anaheim, CA

For the second year in a row, the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) West '99 show is co-located with the Pacific Design Engineering show. Both shows will be held January 26-28, 1999, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, CA.

MD&M West, expected to feature more than 1,000 exhibitors, will include a four-day conference program from January 25-28 at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim. The show is an outlet for providing the medical industry with information on the latest devices, materials, services, and applications to hit the market.

The show's exhibitors have been separated into six pavilions that address attendee manufacturing and design needs. The pavilions cover the following topics, products, and services:

MEDPAK(R) medical packaging solutions--find information on an array of form-fill sealers, dispensers, thermoformers, labelers, and printers.

  • In Vitro Diagnostics--get the details on antigens, reagents, and testing and analysis equipment.

  • Medical electronics--steal a glance at the electronic technologies of the future, including the latest generations of LEDs, LCDs, ASICs, EPROMs, integrated circuits, power supplies, solid-state sensors, embedded PCs, and fiber optics.

  • CAD/CAM/CAE & rapid prototyping--check out the latest CAD, CAM, CAE, and FEA software tools and see demonstrations of SLA, LOM, FDM, and SLS equipment processes.

  • International pavilions--speak with manufacturers, R&D bureaus, logistics specialists, and approval authorities from more than 14 European countries as well as Central and South America, and the Pacific Rim.

  • Bar-coding/labeling solutions--view equipment such as thermal transfer and in-line printers, pressure-sensitive labelers, automated labeling systems, laser marking, and pad printing.

The show's forum provides designers with an opportunity to view the latest innovative products, systems, and services that will help streamline engineering time and costs.

MD&M West '99 is produced and managed by Canon Communications LLC and sponsored by The Canon Family of Medical Manufacturing Publications. For more information on the show, visit its web site at www.devicelink.com/expo/

Dispensing system

The 1500XL cyanoacrylate dispensing system uses a timed air pulse to automatically produce identical dots or neat, uniform beads of cyanoacrylate without the mess, waste, or hazard of squeeze bottles and open containers. A microprocessor-based timer allows users to adjust the dispense cycle in increments as small as 0.001 sec. Applications include critical assembly ones where an alternative to squeeze bottles, toothpicks, and other manual adhesive applicators is required.

Extrusion products

Custom extrusion products are manufactured from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), poly-urethane, nylon, and other fluoropolymers. Applications for these products include single- and multi-lumen tubing, optical fiber sheathing, sheets, and rod components. Replacement biopsy channels are constructed with a PTFE inner layer and supported with a polyurethane-encapsulated, stainless-steel spring.

Rapid prototyping system

The Z402TM rapid prototyping system is a 3D printer that produces 3D models layer by layer from powder bound by a proprietary liquid. The process begins with data in the form of CAD files. The Z402 system software then slices the CAD model into cross-sections between 0.005 and 0.010 inch thick. The printer then prints these cross-sections one after another from the bottom of the design to the top. Build time for a part with dimensions of 834 31.5 inches is about 45 min. The machine measures 29336342 inches high and weighs 300 lb. Maximum build size is 831038.

Alloy

CYREX(R) 200-8005 premium grade, alcohol resistant, acrylic-polycarbonate alloy is targeted for use in medical industry applications that require impact strength and resistance to lipids and isopropanol and ethanol alcohol. The alloy can also withstand the adverse effects of gamma radiation. CYREX 200-8005 can be sterilized using ETO and gamma sterilization. It is non-hemolytic, non-cytotoxic, non-pyrogenic, non-sensitizing, non-mutagenic, and meets the requirements of a UPS Class VI plastic tested at 70C for 24 hours.

Enclosure

The ROSE SL-2000 flat-screen enclosure is for industrial display and control. The enclosure features an ultra-thin, extruded-aluminum profile and is available with the MOTERM(R) console, featuring motorized positioning and a low-cost, lightweight suspension arm. The company manufactures this and other electronic enclosures, including NEMA 4X-rated, EXc/EXi, die-cast aluminum; compression-molded fiberglass; injection-molded polyamid; polycarbonate; and ABS plastic structures.

Copolyesters

EASTAR(R) copolyesters are gamma and EtO sterilizable and combine toughness, chemical resistance, and clarity in close-tolerance injection molding. The copolyesters can also be tinted amber for pharmaceutical packaging applications. EASTAR(R) MN100 copolyester is used in the BloodStreamTM recovery system featuring SmartSuctionTM. The system not only contains the evacuated blood, but also acts as a mechanical component of the peristaltic pump that controls blood movement through the system.

Optical encoder

RCM15 1.5-inch diameter rotary optical encoder combines brushless motor commutation pulses and incremental position feedback in one unit. The encoder also features a single LED and sensor arrangement. A slide/gap mechanism provides for easy installation; and a built-in servo groove allows plus or minus 208 rotation of the encoder to align the commutation tracks with the motor poles. The RCM15 is available with resolution to 1,024 lines, and provides commutation for 4-, 6-, or 8-pole brushless motors.

Cables

Chainflex cables are used in cable carriers on moving carriages in applications involving small bending radii. A durable braid design allows conductor flexibility without stretching and binding, while a polymer central core provides internal strain relief. Chainflex cables resist wear, excessive temperatures, oil, and acids. The cables are available in 20 styles and in different colors and sizes, including shielded and unshielded, twisted pair, individual shielded pair, and no-interface twisted pair.

Motion control technology

VME58 intelligent motion control technology provides up to eight axes of motion control on a single card to VME-bus-compatible computers. Outputs are provided for 12-bit analog or PWM servo output, as well as step and direction for stepper applications. A PID filter is provided with eight user-adjustable parameters. Limit and home switch inputs are provided for all axes as well as user-definable I/O for synchronization and control of other events. Incremental encoder feedback is used for all servo axes and is available on stepper axes on some models. This is used for position feedback and may also be used for slip or stall detection.
