Step motors are an example of a technology that takes on the characteristics of both AC and DC motors. Step motors can operate as synchronous AC motors or take on the characteristics of positioning servos in either case without feedback. We will examine the use of steppers in precision motion applications with a focus on PM and consideration of v/r and hybrid technologies.
