One Hot Polymer

A new transparent, high temperature sulfone material from Solvay Advanced Polymers made its debut at the recent K 2004 Fair in Dusseldorf, Germany. Called SUPRADEL HTS, the material has a heat deflection temperature of 255C and a glass transition temperature of 265C.

Solvay touts the material for having the best heat resistance of any commercial transparent amorphous polymer and the highest glass-transition point of any commercially available thermoplastic. Brian Stern, Solvay's program manager for the new polymer, translates those claims into terms that may matter even more to most mechanical engineers.

"The polymer's amorphous nature and high glass transition point result in a balance of properties that combines transparency with good dimensional stability and creep resistance," he says.

A crystalline polymer, Stern adds, can have good temperature resistance, too, and would tend to have higher dynamic fatigue properties than an amorphous material, but the crystalline plastic would not have the transparency or match the creep resistance of an amorphous.

Solvay's new material also offers properties associated with the current crop of sulfones-a list that includes good strength and stiffness, resistance to hydrolysis by hot water and steam, and good chemical resistance.

SUPRADEL's balance of properties could come in handy in a variety of automotive, industrial, medical, and aerospace applications.

And with its temperature resistance and creep performance, some of the applications will likely involve metal replacement. "Think of SUPRADEL as a way to extend the heat performance of our current product line," Stern says.
