University of New Hampshire Runs on Landfill's Trash Fumes

The University of New Hampshire (UNH) in Durham, NH, has launched a landfill gas project that pipes enriched and purified gas from a landfill in Rochester to the Durham campus. The renewable, carbon-neutral landfill gas from Waste Management's Turnkey Recycling and Environmental Enterprise facility in Rochester will replace commercial natural gas as the primary fuel for UNH's cogeneration plant. The landfill gas will provide 80 to 85 percent of the university's energy, making UNH the first university in the national to use landfill gas as it primary energy source.
