Sun Microsystems has teamed up with Pacific Gas and Electric to add an energy rebate for companies that replace existing servers with Sun's eco-responsible servers. Participants in the Non-Residential Retrofit program can receive a cash savings between $700 and $1,000 per server, or up to 35 percent of the cost when combined with Sun's Upgrade Advantage program. Sun representatives note this is the first time a public utility has offered a rebate for server upgrades.

The program is part of Sun's year-long emphasis on eco-friendly, low-power-consuming products. In early 2006, Sun began delivering the Sun Fire servers featuring CoolThreads technology. The servers are designed to reduce energy consumption by 33 percent. The servers are also a third smaller than their predecessors.
