New York City-What kind of engineering challenge is left to tackle with printers? We take these basic office appliances for granted, only grumbling when they break.

The new magicolor^(R) 6110 Color Laser Printer cranks out 6 to 12 color pages or 24 black and white pages per minute. Its 256 MB of onboard RAM, 200 MHz RISC processor and built-in Ethernet^(R) interface are similar to its predecessor, the magicolor^(R) 6100.

But the machine's patented Crown^(R) III architecture allows it to do some cool new stuff.

The software allows users and network administrators to check on the printer's consumables and job queue online. Its Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) lets users print directly from the Web. Also, the 6110 is truly multi-platform; it can work with Windows, Macintosh, Linux, or any other system.

Other improvements include pistol-revolving ink cartridges that are so easily replaceable they're "vice president-proof," says Marketing Manager Mitch Tousinau.

And it's all thanks to the Crown: "We're a software company, we just don't shrink-wrap it," he says.
