Hewlett-Packard Co.'s (Palo Alto, CA) Kayak PC workstations support user applications, from software development to database management.

The Kayak family includes the XA, which is for the price-sensitive user; the XA-s, which is for high-end 2D and low-end 3D use; and the XU, which provides high-performance graphics for 2D. In addition the XW provides a range of OpenGL 3D graphics power for mechanical design automation and digital-content creation, says Denis Bournival, product manager for the North America PC Marketing Center for HP.

Kayak workstations feature Intel's 350- and 400-MHz Pentium II processors and the Intel 440BX AGPset with the 100-MHz front-side bus. The XA-s, XU, and XW also feature HP MaxiLife, an LCD front panel that corresponds with a chip on the motherboard to produce constantly updated workstation diagnostics, Bournival adds.

The Kayak XU system (pictured) features 64 Mbytes of RAM, and a 4.5-Gbyte/10,000-rpm hard disk. The workstations also feature low-latency CL2 ECC SDRAM memory and expandability up to 1 Gbyte, the maximum supported by Intel's 440BX AGPset.

Enhanced Web service and support offerings allow users to access and download technical information without calling a special hotline.
