Dell Precision M6500: A Workstation Beast

Meet what Dell is referring to as the “beast”-the Precision M6500 dual core, the latest member of its mobile workstation family. Aimed at users of high-end, graphics-rich applications, including 3-D design and MCAD, the Precision M6500 will be offered with the option of Intel’s just announced next-generation Core i7 and i5 dual core processors for heavy-duty computing horsepower.

Pitching the system as one that packs the power of a desktop workstation in a portable package, the latest configuration of the M6500 can be equipped with the Intel Core i7-920XM Quad Core Extreme edition processor linked with fast 1066MHz, 1333MHz or 1600MHz memory. The system, which supports both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows 7, along with older versions, as well as Red Hat Linux 5.3 64-bit, is being touted as the first to offer the option of three internal storage drives. It will also be available with NVIDIA’s Quadro FX 3800M and Quadro FX 2800M professional graphics processing units (GPUs) to further boost graphics performance for demanding applications.
