Would You Wear a Dress Made From a Yoga Mat?

When NPE2015 opens in Orlando, Fla. later this month, Design News will be there. Among the many things we are interested in seeing during the International Plastics Showcase is the expo's opening fashion show, which will feature clothing and accessories designed by students of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).

What does a fashion show have to do with plastics, you ask? Answer: plenty, especially when it's called the Pursuing Zero Waste Fashion Show.

The students created unique designs, including the dress shown, from recycled, reused, and repurposed plastics, such as yoga mats, plastic beads, and vinyl sheet protectors. The show will also include a design created with 3D printing technology by a SCAD student using bioplastics from Green Dot, a sponsor of the show. A total of 13 recycled outfits will be shown.

"We found the students at SCAD to be not only talented and creative but also very involved with environmental issues," said Brad Williams, director of marketing and sales for SPI, in a press release sent to Design News. "Their designs are vivid demonstrations that recycled plastics can gain new lives in many forms -- both as purely utilitarian goods and as objects of beauty."
