Small Relays, Big Performance
October 8, 2007
More and more electronic circuits incorporate relays directly on the pc board making pc board-mounted relays a more attractive solution than a traditional blade terminal relay. With either flux protection or sealed construction, pc board-mounted relays simplify the manufacturing of the board by eliminating processing steps. Some pc board relays even have a surface mount technology (SMT) option. However, pc board space is limited and expensive, so pc board relays must be small. This is true for the high-current long-life relay, high-frequency relay and surface-mount relay shown here.
Long-life Pc Board Relay
IDEC RJ relays have plug-in pc board terminals and switch currents up to 16A. The flux protected compact relays measure 12.7 × 25.5 × 28.8 mm and have a maximum 50 mV contact resistance. Available in 8, 12 and 16A switching current ratings, the relays have a maximum allowable switching voltage of 250V ac or 125V dc. With an operating temperature range of -40 to 70C, the units have an electrical life of 200,000 cycles with ac loads and 100,000 cycles with dc loads and a mechanical life of 30 million cycles with an ac coil and 50 million cycles with a dc coil. A unique return spring structure eliminates unnecessary weak points and increases the electrical conductivity and service life. SPDT, SPDT-NO, DPDT and DPDT-NO configuration types are available, as well as sockets that allow DIN rail, panel or pc board mounting.
Small SMT Relay
In a 12.5 × 7.5 × 10 mm package, Hasco Components HBS Series relays mount to pc boards with either thru-hole or surface-mount attachment. The 1A maximum switching current SPDT relay has a rated load of 0.5A at 125V ac or 30V dc. Measured at 1A 6V dc, the maximum contact resistance is 100 mO. Operate, release and bounce time are 5 ms. The units have a dielectric strength that allows it to survive 400V ac for 1 min between open contacts and 1,000V ac for 1 min between contact and coil. With an ambient operating temperature range of -30 to 70C, the mechanical operating life is 100,000 cycles (1,800 operation times/hour) and electrical life is 10,000,000 (36,000 operation times/hour). The sealed construction relay weighs approximately 2.2 gm.
Small SMT High Frequency Relays
For gigahertz frequency operation, Teledyne Relays ultraminiature broadband relays use surface-mount packaging for simplified circuit board manufacturing. The surface-mount leadformed versions of the previously available GRF100 and GRF300 relays are designated SGRF100 and SGRF300. The DPDT contacts of the hermetically sealed relays each have a maximum initial contact resistance of 0.100O. Measuring 8.51 × 8.51 × 9.02 mm (SGRF100) or 11.68 mm (SGRF300) including the height of the groundshield, the relays operate from dc to 6 GHz and in ambient temperatures from —55 to 85C (storage —65 to 125C). The isolation across contacts and from pole-to-pole, insertion loss and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) are specified from dc to 6 GHz. With a typical contact life rating of 10,000,000 cycles, the units target high-speed digital switching applications, RF test and measurement equipment and testing in high-volume digital and analog semiconductor manufacturing.
