SHOW PREVIEW Noteworthy technology on display
'98 SAE International Automotive Manufacturing Conference & Exposition (IAM)
May 12-14, Cobo Center, Detroit, Michigan
The theme for this year's SAE International Automotive Manufacturing Conference & Exposition (IAM '98), which covers the technologies, products, and services that impact automotive manufacturing, is "Integrated Process Solutions."
As part of this event, representatives from the Big Six North American automotive manufacturers will participate in a panel discussion on OEM operating systems. This marks the first time that Chrysler Corp., Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp., Honda of America Inc., Nissan North America Inc., and Toyota Motor Mfg. USA Inc. address a common issue.
"The need for manufacturing to work hand-in-hand with design engineering has taken on a new priority in the automotive industry," says Frank J. Ewasyshyn, vice president, advanced manufacturing engineering, Chrysler Corp. and general chairman of IAM '98. "Reductions in time-to-market and ever-increasing demands from customers mandate increased teamwork. This need can best be met by manufacturing and design engineering professionals gaining a better understanding of each other's roles and responsibilities."
The show will feature technical sessions, professional development seminars, and more than 100 companies at the exposition. These include Bussman, Cutler-Hammer, Daniel Woodhead Co., EDS, Entrelec Inc., Festo Corp., Hoffman Engineering Co., Rockwell Automation, and Schmersal Inc. Other special events include a panel discussion on emerging controls technology, and plant tours to GM's Cadillac Seville and Chrysler's Viper/Prowler manufacturing facilities.
At the SAE/The Engineering Society (ESD) Foundation Banquet Chrysler's Dennis Pawley will receive the 1998 Manufacturing Leadership Award for his contributions to automotive manufacturing.
IAM is sponsored by SAE and co-sponsored by The Engineering Society (ESD), The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), and IAM.
Workstation
PanelMate PC 7000 Series combines soft operator interface functionality with an industrial PC into a single workstation. Other features, such as the implementation of Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE), client-server functionality, and the use of Dynamic Link Libraries (DLL) provide standard, high-performance data access to and from any Windows-standard application. PanelMate PC offers the same functionality as the PanelMate Power Series and is fully compatible with existing PanelMate versions.

Pneumatic valve manifolds
Smart pneumatic valve manifolds feature embedded SLC 500TM technology to provide a space-saving, multi-function control solution for merging electronic and pneumatic controls in automated systems. The manifolds incorporate the full processing and control functionality of an A-B SLC 5/02TM programmable logic controller in a modular pneumatic valve manifold, making it a self-contained control solution for stand-alone or networked systems, using either DH-485TM or DeviceNetTM protocol. Users can decentralize control throughout the system to provide local control of system sub-routines and control loops.

Enclosures
INLINETM instrumentation enclosures house and protect sensitive electrical or electronic components from dirt, dust, oil, water, or other contaminants, and includes window enclosures. All enclosures are constructed of 16 ga (1.4 mm) steel with continuously welded seams, ground smooth. Other features include a body-flange trough that directs liquids and contaminants away from the enclosure opening and a seamless foam-in-place gasket for an oil- and dust-tight seal.

Connectors
EMI Series of EMI-resistant industrial multipole connectors are available in 6-, 10-, 16-, and 24-pole configurations and provide 70 to 90 dB of EMI attenuation. The connectors consist of a hood which mounts onto a base, which accepts inserts with screw-, crimp, or spring-clamp wiring terminations. EMI shielding is available for both incoming and mating connections. EMI Series are for use with machine tool, material-handling, and other factory automation equipment; for control and signal devices in transportation and other applications; and for medical equipment and facilities.

Sensor
E2J capacitive proximity sensor features a separate amplifier and flat sensing head that are joined by a 1m robotic cable and is for non-metallic and metallic sensing applications. A sensitivity setting on the amplifier allows fine-tuning for detection applications, such as those involving vibration, indirect detection, and variations in target material. A separate amplifier allows remote mounting of the detection head in space-confined sites. The E2J is for use on circuit board conveyors, robotic extension arms, and other semiconductor manufacturing and electronics assembly systems.

Light curtain
LGT protective light curtain is for optical safeguarding on hazardous machines and features a cross-section of 10 3 30 mm. The curtain features a versatile controller available in 24V dc or 115/230V ac, and either DIN-rail mountable or in a sturdy housing. Each controller, equipped with on-board diagnostics and a built-in alignment aid, can operate either one or two light curtain pairs. The LGT offers a resolution of 30 mm and blanking options to bypass up to 4 beams, and is for use on pick-and-place, packaging, revolving-transfer, and component-insertion machines.

Sensors
Strokemasterr cylinder-indicator sensors provide precision end-of-stroke sensing for hydraulic/pneumatic cylinders and 305 degrees of rotational freedom on the connector. Strokemaster sensors allow infinitely adjustable and lockable cable positioning anytime after mounting to the cylinder, without breaking the seal. The sensor provides a 2-mm sensing range to pick up the "spud" of hydraulic/pneumatic cylinders and indicate fully retracted or extended position. It mounts with two screws, and seals with an O-ring, withstanding cylinder pressures to 3,000 psi.
