Simplify WE ARE HERE!!!fiber-optic drive interface

Proponents of digital-control technology assert that controller-amplifier-motor systems perform best when the analog content of the control loop is minimized. MACRO technology maintains the digital connection, and replaces conventional wires between the controller and motor with high-bandwidth fiber optics. To come up with a low-cost motion controller that makes interfacing to different types of drive schemes easy, Delta Tau Data Systems removed the direct PWM output from its PMAC2, and added the MACRO fiber-optic-ring network interface with a 125 Mbit/sec data rate. The result is the PMAC2-PC Ultralite(TM). It performs a digital fiber-optic interface to amplifiers, eliminates the need for the local axis interface circuitry required on other Delta Tau controllers, and runs all existing PMAC and PMAC2 user programs. Available in 40-, 60-, or 80-MHz versions, the controller offers an 18 microsec per axis servo update time.

Soft WE ARE HERE!!!limits extend PLC

The PL-1746 PLS Plug-In-Module for Allen-Bradley PLCs incorporates advanced Programmable Limit Switch (PLS) functions in a 1746 I/O module package. Complimenting control capabilities of the PLC, the module performs tasks that must occur much faster than the normal PLC scan cycle. It provides accurate control of functions at high speeds based on a rotary position input. In addition to precise control of events based on rotary position, this module incorporates high-speed control logic and automatic speed compensation, independent of the PLC scan. Output groups and operating modes move beyond standard PLS functionality to give the user powerful tools that solve control problems accurately and at high speeds. PL-1746 programming may be done through the backplane or through the Electro Cam Corp. model 6400 keypad/display.

WE ARE HERE!!!Integral fan cools BLDC motor

This size 34 brushless dc motor delivers up to two full hp from a small 3.75-inch diameter frame. The three-phase motor design operates on 160 or 230V, and offers continuous-torque ratings of 140 oz-inches at 7,200 rpm and 300 oz-inches at 6,700 rpm, respectively. Enclosed construction, integral cooling fan, and a finned housing increases output and provides overheat protection. Other features include a neodymium rotor magnet to ensure reliable operation at peak output, and Hall-effect switches for commutation. Engineered options to suit customer requirements include: special lead wires and connectors, shafts with special-tooled ends in various lengths, and winding and mounting options.

WE ARE HERE!!!USB: A standard machine bus

Serial and parallel ports on computers may soon be replaced by a Universal Serial Bus. "USB's low cost, high performance, high reliability, and industry-wide backing make it viable as a standard machine bus," says Jacob Tal, president of Galil Motion Control, Mountain View, CA. Galil's commitment to USB is evident on its new DMC-2000 motion controller. Available in one to eight-axis formats, the controller offers similar features as other Galil controllers, but provides a variety of communications options including the new USB protocol. Advantage: USB eliminates the need to install cards into dedicated computer slots, and allows computer peripherals to automatically configure upon connection without rebooting. A variety of software tools make setup, servo tuning, and interface with ActiveX tools quick and easy. And a complete library of functions calls for C/C++ programmers is available.

WE ARE HERE!!!Positioning stage goes long

Baldor Electric Co., through its wholly owned division, Northern Magnetics (NORMAG), announces the release of a new 120-inch positioning stage. With a 144-inch travel length, the enclosed stage design uses non-contact 3-phase linear brushless motors that reportedly reduce maintenance and downtime. With an accuracy of 0.001 inch/ft, a repeatability of 0.001 inch, and a flatness of 0.0024 inch, the new stage may improve performance in applications such as measurement machines, inspection equipment, and machine-tool axis drives. Capable of 1,000-lb payloads, 5 g accelerations, and velocities of up to 200 inches/min, the stage's continuous force rating is up to 160 lbs, with peak forces ranging to 480 lbs.

WE ARE HERE!!!Sub-miniature motor/drive puts out high torque

Touted as the world's smallest 5-phase hybrid stepping motor coupled to an ultra compact driver, this new sub-miniature Vexta(reg) 5-phase step motor and driver package produces holding torque levels from 4.7 oz-inches in the PMC33A3 (1.1 inches square X 1.22 inches long) and 8.5 oz-inches in the PMC35A3 (1.1 inches square X 2.0 inches long.) These motors weigh in at only 0.22 and 0.37 lbs, respectively. The micro-compact driver (2.2 inches wide X 2.83 inches long X 0.47 inch high) runs on 24 or 36V dc. This constant-current, Pentagon driver weighs only 0.9 oz and helps the PMC33B3 step motor maintain 4.5 oz-inches over the speed range of 30 to 40,000 pps and the PMC35B3 maintain 8 oz-inches over the speed range of 30 to 25,000 pps. Using five available gearhead ratios: 3.6:1, 7.2:1, 10:1, 20:1, and 30:1, these step motors develop running torque ranging from 10 oz-inches for the PMC33B1-MG3.6 to 70 oz-inches for the PMC35B1-MG30.
