Google Acquires BumpTop 3D Desktop App

3-D models for CAD and simulation are now a familiar part of the engineering toolkit. 3-D technology is even getting more consumery, thanks to the emergence of popular 3-D games and now movies like James Cameron’s Avatar. Now, it looks like search engine giant Google is looking to make 3-D technology a part of the computer desktop and Web experience and potentially, smart phone user interface as well. The company has acquired BumpTop, a start-up selling software that turns the desktop into a three-dimensional space. Google hasn’t formally announced the acquisition or said what it plans to do with the new technology. The announcement was made on the BumpTop Web site, which is now allowing users, for a limited time, to download the interface for free. The freeware is available for Mac and PC and is fully compatible with multi-touch gestures, including those supported by Windows 7.
