DuPont Engineering Polymers, Wilmington, DEA new acetal resin from DuPont, Delrin(reg) 500AL, exhibits much lower wear and dynamic friction than standard acetal. Test data show that gears and other moving parts made of the resin perform well over a wide range of pressure-velocity (PV) conditions against metal, acetal, and other plastic countersurfaces.
Delrin 500AL includes an advanced internal lubricant system. The accompanying graph reveals the results of a life-cycle test involving spur gears driven by a steel pinion without an external lubricant or grease. Gears made from Delrin 500AL took three to five times as many cycles to reach the same wear level as parts made from a standard acetal resin tested under the same operating conditions.
The new resin also offers outstanding molding productivity with a wide processing window. It uses the same thermal stabilization technology as the DuPont Delrin P range.
Its mechanical properties are quite similar to those of a typical unmodified acetal homopolymer. Tensile strength, elongation, flexural modulus, and impact resistance are only slightly lower than those of Delrin 500P.
The price of Delrin 500AL is in the $3.50 to $4 per lb range. It is a member of a family of modified Delrin acetal resins offering various levels of wear performance and cost when paired with different countersurfaces.
