With several large medical device companies expected to make acquisitions this year, along with valuations of prospective acquisition targets dropping, many industry analysts have noted that 2022 could be a big year for medical device and diagnostics M&A.

Based on management commentary during recent earnings calls, companies that are likely to be active in M&A this year include Johnson & Johnson, Hologic, Boston Scientific (although not to the extent it was in 2021), and possibly Abbott.

On Friday, Ryan Zimmerman, a medtech analyst at BTIG, pointed to seven medical device subsectors that could be attractive from an M&A perspective. In the following slides, we take a look at each of those spaces and offer our own educated guesses as to some of the players that could potentially be scooped up by a larger company this year.
