Cold chain distribution for medical products piqued widespread interest in late 2020 with news of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine’s ultra-cold storage requirements. But that vaccine is not the first medical product to require specific temperatures during storage and shipping, nor will it be the last.

Packagers that work with pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and other healthcare products have long understood the importance of temperature monitoring and control throughout storage and distribution. Many medical products are temperature-sensitive, so much so that experiencing too-hot or too-cold temperatures can render them useless.

To monitor temperatures during shipping and storage, packagers and logistics professionals rely on temperature indicators and loggers. When the devices flag a temperature problem, compromised products can be identified and segregated prior to use.

Here are five temperature indicators and loggers that illustrate just how far technology has come in this sector of packaging.
