8 Things You Can't Miss at The Pacific Design & Manufacturing Show

The Pacific Design & Manufacturing event and trade show starts next week. With so many exhibitors conference talks, and activities to choose from, Design News is sharing our editor's picks of some of the can't-miss events during your time at the show.

1.)  Babak Parviz

Tuesday, Feb. 10, 9:30 a.m.

The innovator behind Google Glass and Google's Smart Contact Lens will deliver a keynote discussing the future of wearable technology.

2.) The Golden Mousetrap Awards 

Tuesday, Feb. 10, 5 p.m.

Join Design News for The Golden Mousetrap Awards, celebrating the very best in the design and manufacturing industries. Winners will be crowned in categories including Electronics & Test, Automation & Control, Design Hardware & Software, and Materials & Assembly. We'll also be honoring our Rising Engineering Star, Gadget Freak of the Year, and presenting a Lifetime Achievement Award.

3.) Build an Apple Computer with Ben Heck

Tuesday, Feb. 10, 12 p.m.

The host of element14's “The Ben Heck Show” will take to the Center Stage and show you how to build a replica Apple 1 computer from scratch. A must-see for hackers, DIY types, and fans of retro computing!

4.)  Innovation in Design Boot Camp

Thursday, Feb. 12, 10 a.m.

This one-day boot camp will guide you through the latest trends and technologies in design engineering. Join experts from big-name companies including Tesla Motors, Dell, Coca-Cola, Karten Design, and Samsung as they discuss a variety of topics including: Bringing Wearable/IoT Ideas to Life with Rapid Design & Prototyping Using Open HW & SW; Creating New Business Models and Product Categories; Emerging Mobile Technologies & Trending Mobile Markets; and Using Cross-Collaboration to Bring Forth Innovation

5.) Innovation Tours 

Need a guided tour of the show floor? The Innovation Tours are 60-minute guided tours with industry experts who will introduce you to exhibitors and suppliers showcasing the newest technologies and industry innovations. In addition to tours on Wearable Technlogy and Advances in Robotics, there will be a tour on 3D Printing led by Design News Editor-in-Chief William Ng. By the time the tour's over you'll have seen 3D-printed shoes and even human organs and you'll have a better understanding than ever of how 3D printing is changing multiple industries.

6.) Innovations in 3D Printing

Wednesday, Feb. 11, 10:00 a.m.

A full day of conference sessions will go in depth into the rapildy changing field of 3D printing. Experts from Statasys, Airwolf 3D, 3D Systems, and more will take you through a comprehensive list of topics including: 3D Printing Uses in Rapid Prototyping; Innovative Materials and Uses of Metal in 3D Printing; and Making the Most of Your Current CAD Technology in 3D Printing.

7.) Do You Know Science?

Thursday, Feb. 12, 11:15 a.m.

How smart are you? Come test your mettle on the Center Stage with a one-of-a-kind engineering trivia game hosted by Professor Pythogoras. Prizes will be won, egos will be stroked, and lessons will be learned.

8.) Teardowns

Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb 10-11, 3:45 p.m.

How does the iPhone 6 Plus stand up against the Nexus 6? What about the iPad Air and the Microsoft Surface Pro 3? Join Eric Doster from Dozuki and iFixit as they tear into some of the hottest consumer products on the market. We all know the saying – it's what's inside that counts.
