As has been the case for many years, many Americans will celebrate Independence Day this weekend, whether at home or at various vacation destinations. After the beach outing or barbeque, many will wrap up the 4th of July by viewing a fireworks display. Over the years, these displays have become much more elaborate, producing a dazzling array of colors and effects that elicit oohs and aaahs and cheers from fascinated spectators. Many larger displays are controlled by computers synchronized with music.

But regardless of complexity, there are basic elements to producing a fireworks display that have not changed. In this video, Known pyrotechnics expert Mike Tockstein delves into the details of how fireworks are generated. Tockstein takes viewers through the inner workings of a fireworks display shell. He explains the physics of fireworks, how fireworks produce different effects and colors, and dispels myths about fireworks.
