ZMDI Energy Efficient Low Voltage LED Driver ICs

ZMD AG has introduced the second wave of itsZLED family of LED control solutions with two new low-voltage ICs designed forbattery-powered handheld devices. The ZLED7012 and ZLED7022incorporate low-noise, constant-frequency charge pump dc/dc converters that canefficiently drive up to four (ZLED7012) or six (ZLED7022) strings of LEDs. Thedevices come in the ultra-small UTQFN package (2 x 2mm) and require threeexternal components for operation.

Capable of operatingefficiently with dc voltage supplies ranging from 2.8 to 5.5V, the devices are usefulfor small, battery-powered LED backlighting applications such as mobile phones,PDAs, GPS and navigation systems. The devices can also be used for illuminationof digital photo frames, low voltage LED lighting fixtures as well asgeneral-purpose low-voltage industrial and consumer applications.

With the pulse countcontrol (PCC) serial digiA-tal input, designers can enable and disable the LEDsand set the current level. The programmable current levels range from 1.8 to20mA per LED channel. This simple, high-speed interface allows efficientreal-time manageA-ment of LEDs via microcontrollers or control systems.

Additional devicefeatures include integrated soft-start circuitry to protect against excessivein-rush current durA-ing power-on and a low-current shutdown mode that reducesquiescent current consumption to approximately 1I.25A. The ZLED7012 and ZLED7022 operateover a temperature of range of -40 to +85C.
