  • The Holographic Windshield Display technology projects driving information onto the windshield.
  • The technology was developed with Zeiss.
  • The goal is to launch the product by 2027.

The Hyundai Group’s automotive components supply subsidiary, Hyundai Mobis, showed off an impressive holographic head-up display at CES in Las Vegas. Unlike BMW’s Panoramic Vision, which employs an opaque black strip at the base of the windshield to ensure the visibility of the projected image, the Mobis display works on clear glass like a traditional HUD.

Instead of BMW’s black strip, the Mobis system uses a specialized film embedded with a Holographic Optical Element (HOE), which applies light diffraction to project images and videos directly to the viewer's eyes.

BMW has a head start, with Panoramic Vision going into production later this year. Hyundai Mobis and ZEISS plan to complete pre-development by mid-2026, with the goal of bringing the product to market by 2027.

The goal for both systems is to maximize the information available to drivers while minimizing distraction and reducing the display screen area on the dashboard. The Mobis system was modeled in a Kia's EV9 for CES, transforming the windshield into a transparent display screen without additional display devices. It can project information such as driving data, navigation, and music playlists onto the lower portion of the windshield for a more intuitive and immersive experience.
