Design News hears from Harley-Davidson chief engineer Mike Case about the toughest challenge his team faced while developing the new 2021 Pan America adventure bike.

Harley-Davidson is renowned for its massive "grand American touring" models like the Road King and the Electra Glide, so the company's move into the dual-sport on-and-off-road "adventure touring" market marked a big change. That's not only a change in philosophy but in technology, as Harley had to hone its skill at minimizing weight for these new bikes, which tip the scales at 300 pounds less than the company's next-lightest touring model.
