The job market is seeking specialized engineers. Hot jobs in engineering include a range of specialized disciplines. Machine learning, cloud dev-ops, and cybersecurity are just a few of the in-demand engineering jobs. Other openings for engineers include robotics software engineers, self-driving car engineers, and vision systems engineers.

The pandemic revealed holes in the technology job field. Manufacturers were already facing labor shortfalls that were exasperated by the pandemic. Those job openings are just growing and growing. Meanwhile, college studies are finding that engineers are the highest-paid graduates with a bachelor's degree. All that adds up to 2021 shining as a great year to be an engineer.

Rob Spiegel has covered manufacturing for 19 years, 17 of them for Design News. Other topics he has covered include automation, supply chain technology, alternative energy, and cybersecurity. For 10 years, he was the owner and publisher of the food magazine Chile Pepper.
