Raising thousands of turkeys has long relied on experience and seat-of-pants decisions. But technology is now playing a much larger role in raising and harvesting turkeys. In this YouTube video on the channel of Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation, farmers discuss the use of a program called TurkeyTrac. This program, developed by a fifth-generation turkey farmer, enables farmers to monitor turkey feeding, growth, and health, tracking historical and real-time data on parameters such as temperature, humidity, food and water consumption, and more. The program provides templates that present a host of turkey breeding goals and monitors farmers' progress against them.

Through TurkeyTrac, farmers can check on their turkey flock at any time, including from their computers, smartphones, or tablets and not have to venture out into the farm in the middle of the night. The end result is a meatier and better-tasting turkey on the dinner table.
