Prior to the IoT Solutions World Congress—an annual global conference on industrial IoT development—the Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) ran a competition of testbeds. From the competition, IIC judges selected 10 testbeds to display at the conference in Barcelona Oct. 16-18. The IoT Solutions World Congress is organized by Fira Barcelona, the producer of Mobile World Congress, and IIC, an industry group founded by AT&T, Cisco, GE, IBM, Intel, and others.

The IIC testbeds are R&D IoT platforms deployed and tested in an environment that resembles real world conditions. The testbeds are typically associated with industry verticals and act as a template for comprehensive IoT deployment. According to IIC, the testbeds demonstrate new technologies to create products and services, show how new technologies can be usefully deployed, fuel R&D ideas and opportunities, and generate an appreciable and measurable impact on new and existing markets.
Some of the testbeds that will be on display at the IoT Solutions World Congress include:
- 3D Print Footwear – ECCO footwear and 3D experience company Dassault Systèmes will showcase a data-driven experience in which individual bio-mechanical data is combined with additive manufacturing to create customized shoes in the store.
- IoT Device Management System – Intel, ARM, and Mocana have developed a system capable of setting up equipment and sensors—and have them transmitting relevant data to any cloud-based platform—within seconds of power-on.
- Smart Fire Truck – Developed by Emergency One together with Vodafone, this smart fire truck is equipped with a set of solutions that allows the automation of a series of tasks in the control panel including tank measurement and showing who was on board.
- Smart Factory Web Testbed - Led by IIC members Fraunhofer IOSB and Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI), this testbed forms a network of smart factories that share production resources and assets to improve order fulfillment.
The testbeds are available at no cost to IIC members. According to the consortium, the outcomes from testbeds are the cornerstones of a feedback loop from concept to reality and back to guidance for further innovation.
Real World Demonstrations of Industrial IoT
In keeping with IIC’s emphasis on usable testbeds that demonstrate IoT systems, the sessions at IoT Solutions World Congress will offer real-world presentations of IoT in use. “We’ve focused entirely on use cases, and all speakers talk about use cases rather than another product pitch or service pitch,” Richard Soley, executive director of IIC, told Design News. “The whole idea is that attendees will walk away with real lessons on how to build systems. Vendors are part of the conference, but we don’t let them speak unless it’s a use case.”
The testbeds on display at the conference go beyond those developed in conjunction with IIC. “We run a competition to propose testbeds. The testbeds on the show floor are not just from IIC,” said Soley. “We’re trying to focus on the entire range of industrial IoT deployment. The middle of the show floor is not sold. It’s the testbed winners from the jury. There were 70 applications, and the jury chose the 10 best testbeds.”
Why Barcelona for the IoT Solutions World Congress?
IoT Solutions World Congress is set in Barcelona, Spain each year. “World Congress began as a partnership between IIC and Fira four years ago. We thought there was a huge interest from the vertical industries,” Roger Bou, innovation director for IoT World Congress, told Design News. “We chose Fira and Barcelona because it’s between Asia and Europe and because they can handle large events. IoT Solutions World Congress has been doubling its size year after year.”
Rob Spiegel has covered automation and control for 17 years, 15 of them for Design News. Other topics he has covered include supply chain technology, alternative energy, and cyber security. For 10 years, he was owner and publisher of the food magazine Chile Pepper.
