Chevy Volt Structure Enhancements

GM engineers will beef up a laterally oriented cross-car structure that protects the battery and add steel to longitudinally oriented members around the battery. The enhancements are being made to help the Volt handle the type of impacts seen in the NHTSA's side pole crash test.

It's interesting to note that the fix is aimed at the side of the vehicle, specifically to resist the NHTSA side pole crash test, which is new. A few years ago, this test wouldn't have been performed and the subsequent fire hazard might not have been found until it happened to a Volt owner.
