If he were able to slow the cycling of the cylinder a bit, and arrange for the hammer to bounce off the bell, it would be even louder, and it would sound much better.

You're right, William. At the very end, you can hear how the clanging would sound if the speed of the hammer were not so rapid. The last clang has a clear, full sound.
