Design Guide
Ordinary 60W incandescent bulbs only convert about 8% of their input energy into usable light. Most of the remaining energy is conveniently radiated out as infrared (73%) or conducted out through the lamp base (19%). In the case of a visible-spectrum HBLED however, there is negligible IP emission - thus the die's excess heat must be removed by conduction, convection or both.
Design Guide
It's good practice to apply a systems-level approach to high-brightness LED (HBLED) illumination applications. Minimally, the system includes the optical, thermal and electrical characteristics of the HBLED, the lens (if any) which is built-in to its package, secondary optics such as external plastic lenses/reflectors to direct the light as your application requires the power driver electronics.

Primum non nocere is taught to all medical students. It means "first, do no harm". Physicians must always consider the risk of inflicting further pain or suffering when treating a disease. Today, many minimally invasive surgical and diagnostic procedures are performed with the aid of an endoscope. Find out how HBLEDs may prove to be a major inflection point in the evolution and safety of endoscopy and laparoscopic surgery.
Design Guide
In 1887, Lord Rayleigh published a study detailing the curious way light propagates through certain crystalline minerals. He noted that closely-spaced transparent layers inside the crystal operated like an optical color filter. Find out what this has to do with high-brightness LEDs.
Design Guide
On an applications-level there are many instances where you will need to continuously and precisely vary the light output of an HBLED system. Learn why dimming is trivial for incandescent bulbs, problematic for fluorescents, and quite interesting for HBLEDs.
Design Guide
This resource addresses how it is easy to take common household items for granted. Flashlights are a prime example. They are typically placed at the back of a drawer somewhere, next to the fist aid kit. But for many professionals, outdoor enthusiasts, military personnel and police, these devices are mission critical.
Design Guide
This resource explains the battle between Thomas Edison, a major stakeholder of direct current (DC) power distribution and George Westinghouse, who believed that alternating current (AC) was a superior technology. Westinghouse's AC system which employed pairs of step down transformers, ultimately proved to be the best method for delivering electrical power over long distances. If the dominant artificial light source at that time had been high-brightness LEDs, it's possible Westinghouse would not have won so easily.
White Paper
This resource addresses how it may surprise you to learn that neon tubes are one of the most common lighting technologies in use today...for commercial signage. Neon is primarily used in channel lettering. Channel lettering refers to the large illuminated letters and logos mounted on the sides of office buildings and retail stores.
