The range of metals that can be 3D printed is increasing. ExOne has added iron infiltrated with bronze, and bonded tungsten, to the range of metal and ceramic powders that can be used with its multi-material M-Flex machines.

Robots may be getting more sensitive, due to a breakthrough by engineers at the University of California, Berkeley. An electronic skin made of a sensor network mounted on a substrate of flexible plastic reacts to touch by lighting up.

A research team at North Carolina State University has figured out how to 3D print small structures made from liquid metal -- at room temperatures. The freestanding 3D-printed structures retain their liquid state, yet are stable.

A new high-performance, PEEK-like phthalonitrile resin developed by the US Naval Research Laboratory is resistant to high temperatures, flammability, and impacts. It can be processed using standard methods like resin infusion molding and resin transfer molding.

Bombardier's Flight Test Vehicle 1 incorporates carbon composites in some areas. The main fuselage and structure are composed primarily of aluminum-lithium, making it about 2,000 pounds lighter and reducing fuel use by about 20 percent.
