Velocity of piston and rack assembly: An integral cam that work between segmental wheels, explained earlier, would work as a shock absorber to decelerate and accelerate the assembly at TDC and BDC. So the velocity curve is not a square wave. It would be just like a sine curve with a straight line at the top. Starting 45 degrees is like a sine curve's 0 to 90 degrees, the next 90 degrees is a horizontal line parallel to x axis and the ending 45 degrees is like the 90 to 180 degrees of a sine curve
@jhmumford: I can't give anything away, but if you think that two-stroke engines are "very polluting and inefficient," you may want to stay tuned for the new product that Evinrude will be revealing in less than two weeks.
Evinrude's first-generation E-TEC engines (DI two-stroke), which came out about ten years ago, were the first outboards to receive the EPA's Clean Air Award... and still have the lowest reportable emissions of any outboard, two-stroke or four-stroke. Now Evinrude is planning to unveil a new era of ourboards. All I can say is: prepare to be surprised.
